Melbourne Open House is a not-for-profit association whose committee has run annual events over the last two years providing the public a free-of-charge and rare opportunity to discover the often hidden wealth of architectural, engineering and historic buildings nestled around the city.
The inaugural MOH 2008 event saw eight buildings open, with more than 30,000 visits across the day. From this ‘pilot’ the 2009 event expanded to 32 buildings incorporating Docklands in addition to Melbourne’s CBD. The 2009 MOH event was held in association with the State of Design Festival, and saw almost 51,000 visits to the open buildings.
Melbourne Open House’s purpose is to:
- Foster an appreciation and understanding of the value of architectural, urban design and design excellence;
- Undertake activities that are consistent with the encouragement of architecture, urban design and design excellence;
- Showcase good design, including through the opening of buildings to the public and the provision of information in relation to the architecture, urban design and design generally of those buildings, as part of the annual Melbourne Open House event.
